
What are your royal roots? In August of 1619, “20 and odd” Africans arrived in the Virginia Colony which was founded in 1607. In 2019, a 400th Commemoration took place featuring events in the United States and parts of Africa. However, Angola, the nation of origin of those Africans taken to Virginia in 1619, is relatively unknown.
This panel will provide Angola’s perspective on the African’s arrival in Virginia in 1619. Special emphasis will be given to the story of Queen Nzingha of Ndongo and Mtambe. Ndongo is known today as Angola. Queen Nzingha (1583-1663) was a diplomat and warrior who battled the Portuguese to stop the slave trade.
